Office of the President
Robert Harriss is President and CEO of the Houston Advanced Research Center. He also holds adjunct appointments as Professor, Dept. of Marine Sciences, Texas A&M University-Galveston and Professor, College of Architecture and Planning, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. His current personal research interests include the design of disaster resistant and resilient communities; applications of information technologies, gaming, and new media to lifelong learning about disaster preparedness and recovery; and the design of technology pathways to a future bioeconomy.
Bob was an ISI Highly Cited Scientific Author in 2003. He participates in a variety of professional service activities including Contributing Editor, Environment, 1996 – present; Editorial Board, Journal of Earth System Science Education, 2000 – present; National Science Foundation, Geosciences Advisory Committee, 2003-2006; National Science Foundation, Chair, Geosciences Advisory Subcommittee on Education and Diversity, 2005-2006; and the National Science Foundation, GPRA Advisory Committee, 2003-present.
He was born in Brownsville, Texas and has family ties to Galveston and Waco, Texas. Bob received a B.S. in Geology from Florida State University in 1962 and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from Rice University in 1965. A more complete description of Bob’s professional career is available in his CV.
