Sr. Research Scientist
Research Operations
Dr. Rudolf Smaling currently serves as Senior Research Scientist in the Environmental Group at the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC). In the position he is responsible for managing the New Technology Research and Development program (NTRD). The purpose of the NTRD program is to identify, test and evaluate new emissions-reducing technologies with potential for commercialization in the state of Texas and to facilitate their certification or verification.
Dr. Smaling’s technical background includes Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering and System Design and Management as well as a PhD in Engineering Systems. He has over 15 years of industry technical and management experience in mobile emissions controls prior to joining HARC in April 2006. Dr. Smaling has held positions of increasing responsibility with General Motors, Engelhard, Woodward Governor and for the last 8 years with ArvinMeritor. In his last position prior to joining HARC, Dr. Smaling was director of engineering responsible for the development of an on-board fuel reforming technology with applications in SI engine efficiency improvement and diesel engine emissions controls.
Dr. Smaling has presented at various conferences, has authored several papers, has been awarded various patents, and has several patents pending. In addition, he has given testimony to the Department of Energy concerning the viability of on-board fuel reforming.
