(The Woodlands, TX - July 28, 2004) Houston is hot, but a recently released plan by the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) calls for building a Cool Houston through use of "cool technologies". Over the past two years HARC staff has worked with experts and Houston organizations to show how these technologies can actually change our hot climate to achieve cleaner air, lower utility bills, and an improved quality of life. Cool technologies in the Plan include reflective roofing, green roofs, various paving methods, and an old environmental technology - trees. The Plan was produced through the support of the Brown Foundation, Inc., Houston Endowment, Inc. and HARC. HARC will be working with Houston organizations, governmental agencies and community leaders over the next two years to foster understanding of Plan components.
The Cool Houston Plan will be widely distributed to area officials and interested organizations over the next few months. Information on the plan can also be obtained at http://www.harc.edu/coolhouston/. For further information, contact the project director David Hitchcock at HARC.
