Jurgen Schmandt Named HARC Fellow
(The Woodlands, TX - August 8, 2005) Jurgen Schmandt, one of the nation's leading experts on sustainable development and professor emeritus at The University of Texas at Austin, has been named Distinguished Fellow at the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC).

In making the announcement, HARC President and Chairman Todd Mitchell said the honor is the center's highest level of recognition for research performance. "We are delighted to recognize Dr. Schmandt for his outstanding contributions to the field of sustainability and to HARC," Mitchell said.

Dr. Schmandt has played a key role at HARC since 1985 when he became one of its first directors. Earlier, Schmandt became acquainted with the work of HARC's founder, George Mitchell, in drawing attention to the future of the planet through the Center for Growth Studies, an organization that preceded HARC's genesis by almost 10 years.

Dr. Schmandt served as a Professor in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Austin from 1971 to 2001. Since 1985, he has held a joint appointment with both HARC and UT-Austin. For two decades, Schmandt commuted to his town home in The Woodlands each Sunday, returning to his students, classroom, and research activities in Austin on Wednesdays. He also traveled to Brazil, Mexico, Europe, and across the U.S. on behalf of HARC's policy research.

At HARC, Dr. Schmandt has served as its chief policy officer, director of the Center for Global Studies (formerly Growth Studies), director of the Mitchell Center for Sustainable Development, and chairman of HARC's Advisory Roundtable. In addition, he has served the scientific and international community in many roles, among them as Chair of the International Affairs Committee at the National Science Foundation, as a Fellow at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, on a subcommittee of the President's Council on Sustainable Development, as a member of Sigma Xi's International Committee, on the Esquel Group Foundation's Advisory Committee, and on the Board of Directors of the Rio Grand/Rio Bravo Basin Coalition.

Dr. Schmandt is author, co-author or editor of 10 books and numerous papers on topics related to sustainable development, water management, and technology development. Notable among these are two books on the impact of global warming and related policy that emerged from Mitchell Prize conferences. He has also appeared as an invited speaker at conferences across the world.

Founded in 1982, the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is a nonprofit organization based in The Woodlands dedicated to improving human and ecosystem well-being through the application of sustainability science and principles of sustainable development.
