(The Woodlands, TX - October 20, 2005) Houston's regional forestlands have more than 600 million trees that extend over a 2,000 square mile area. Much of this forest cover is located in the north and eastern parts of the eight-county region. The region's forest cover has been the focus of an intensive multi-year study by the scientists, forest experts and analysts of the Texas Forest Service and the U.S. Forest Service. The Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) has been involved since the project's inception in air quality analysis, remote sensing, technical support, and project outreach.
On October 24, 2005, study results will be released at a major press conference and luncheon event sponsored by fifteen area organizations, including HARC. The report entitled Houston's Regional Forest: Structure, Functions, and Values provides the latest and most comprehensive look at the economic and environmental values of trees and forests within the Houston region. This is the first report documenting the contributions that trees make toward air pollution removal, carbon sequestration, and residential energy savings for the entire Houston region.
Texas legislators who sponsored legislation benefiting urban forest goals will be honored at this event.
