The purpose of this project is to develop from available information some graphics that will produce awareness about possible risks in the Houston area associated with environmental factors and selected health conditions. If human health is protected by the existence of most environmental regulations, then an increased awareness of the connection of our environment to our health is necessary for taking steps in improving our health. To this effect, we are developing indicator maps on the status of various environmental hazards, exposures, and health conditions throughout the Houston metropolitan area. Many questions still need to be answered before we could advise citizens on how best to respond to existing or perceived health risks.
The end result of this project will be a public website accessible from the City of Houston Department of Health website. Compiled into a common map layout for indicators will be information on criteria air pollutants, air toxics, and lead hazards, with later additions including indicators over a suite of human illnesses and cancers often suspected to be associated with such hazards.
