MOVING KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION
Phase 3

The third phase of our research focused on the conservation organizations working to save lands in the big Thicket. Because both agricultural and conservation lands are important in stemming land fragmentation, conservation professionals are increasingly trying to find ways to link land conservation to the quality of life of rural communities. Conservation organizations have made this linkage in four general ways (a) illustrating the economic benefits of conservation, (b) promoting economic incentives for conservation, (c) linking conservation to cultural heritage and (d) promoting participatory processes to include stakeholders in making conservation decisions.

Linking land conservation to rural quality of life requires conservation organizations to engage local communities and while maintaining high scientific standards. In this way, they are boundary organizations, forming a bridge between the scientific and non-scientific communities and facilitating interaction and communication between the two.
