This project conducts a meteorological and emissions sensitivity modeling study of the effects of land use and land cover modifications on the urban heat island and air quality in the Houston-Galveston non-attainment region. The proposed work generates meteorological fields reflecting surface characteristic changes caused by the land-use and land-cover modifications. Biogenic emissions are developed using up-to-date land-use and land-cover data and incorporate them into the Texas emission inventory for use in the air quality modeling for the Houston-Galveston area. This project is part of a larger project funded by the U.S. Forest Services to build tools and systems to help state and local groups monitor and guide the development of Houston's green infrastructure.
