This project reduces error in meteorological simulations by applying EnKF to analysis and data assimilation in coastal areas. EnKF and parameter estimation techniques will be used to improve PBL (planetary boundary layer) parameterizations.
The EnKF trechnique has considerably more potential than the limited scope of this project implies. Besides improving data assimilation, the technique could be used as an inverse method to attribute observed concentrations to specific sources, to identify the timing and location of adaptive aircraft or mobile surface observations, or to site permanent monitors. This project might be considerably expanded later on as a powerful engine for transport, monitoring, and emissions/ambient data reconciliation studies anywhere in Texas. One way to apply this project to state-wide transport issues would be to use the method to determine a strategy for CO observations (including use of satellite- derived regional CO measurements) that would identify source regions both within and outside Texas.
