July 19, 2005
The evening session centered on the partnership between a client and her architect - a relationship that is the ground work for green, energy effective and healthful home and office design. The three young designers outlined not only how they have been chosen by clients but also the best way to communicate, plan and coordinate a project with a design and construction team. Rives Taylor introduced the concept of "why an architect" as a partner in the creation of your project by recounting his years as the University Architect for UT Health Science Center in Houston.
Following the three presentations the group collectively fielded questions for about an hour: questions ranging from the cost of designing with an architect to code implications of green housing.
Donna Kacmar, AIA - architect works, inc.
Focusing on small commercial and house designs, Donna outlined the process involved in programming a project (understanding the client needs, the size, budget and site), designing a project, pricing a project and constructing a project. Donna discussed the tools of the architect - drawings and specifications - as well as the phases involved in design and construction. She showed several of her firm's green projects that highlighted the positive aspects and outcomes of a client using an architect's design that focused on environmental sensitivity: site stewardship, healthful living, energy effectiveness and the design lessons from buildings of the past that endured. http://www.architectworks.com/
Fernando Brave, AIA - Brave Architects
With a similar presentation, Fernando discussed American Institute of Architect resources highlighting ways to identify an architect and the kind of fees associated with the process. He also outlined sources for green residential design as well as the way to work with the contractor to get the best results. He too showed some examples of projects where economical approaches led to quality, energy effective and healthful environments.
Danny Bankhead, AIA, CSI - Rey de la Reza Architects, Inc.
Danny focused on larger projects, particularly the Reagan High School in the Houston Heights. This project for HISD takes high performance or green design to a larger scale with an even greater role of community resource stewardship. Aiming for historic preservation, durable and energy effective design and the provision of enhanced community amenities, the high school realization process demonstrated the importance of clear goals, communications and careful design and construction strategies. This team driven process is all led by an architect keeping his eye on the ultimate built product and the long term life of the building and its users.
