Over 60 people attended the evening's discussion on the need for sustainable housing held at the University of Houston, Gerald D. Hines School of Architecture Building, Houston, TX.
Brian Yeoman, Senior Research Scientist at HARC and advisory board member for Cultivate Green welcomed the attendees. He also mentioned plans for events in January, February, and March with information on topics and locations to be provided in the coming weeks.
Michael Myers, Senior Project Manager, Energy and Environmental Services, at Lockheed Martin provided an overview of green building programs/initiatives in Texas He spoke about the importance of considering the entire building envelope whether you are building commercially or residentially. Dr. Subrato Chandra, Program Director, Buildings Research Division at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) delivered the rest of the evening's presentation. Using an airflow model, he demonstrated the House as a system concept and the increasing need for sustainable housing.
Dr. Chandra continued his lecture with a detailed presentation discussing the importance of enhancing indoor air quality through source control, ventilation, dehumidification, cleaning, etc. Additionally, he provided examples of durable and disaster resistant construction used in Florida that would also be useful in the hurricane prone areas of Texas.
