About Us
Tracing our origins to a concern for the environment that is Houston, the about us section highlights; what we do, who our partners are, profiles our advisors, chronicles recent events, and shares some of our planning concepts.

The mission of this site is to provide the citizens of the Houston metropolitan area green building materials information. We intend to do this in the most user friendly for both residential and for commercial/institutional usage. The keys to the database are two fold; first the manufacturer data base is derived from the effort of the Building Green suite and the work done in the Environmental Building News, and the effort of Cultivate Green volunteers finding, and verifying Houston area vendors who sell the products. The data is presented for usage by zip code spatial (distance in miles from the user entered zip code.) The result is hot linked to Goggle's mapping system software to ease in the routing for that eventual trip to purchase the goods.

The database includes the local vendors name, phone number, fax, e-mail address and website when we were able to obtain the information. You will notice the Green Grid which is attached to each vendor item pair. Over time this grid will be populated with more data. We have discussed with Greenguard, and Greenseal two additional certifying bodies our desire to show or indicate when either or both of these entities have certified the products as "green" as a further indices for consideration by the user. We have received preliminary approval from both parties.

In addition to having a list of manufacturers for each vendor some products have links to related articles. Currently those articles are provided by Environmental Building News but additional articles will be added over time.

This site is available at: www.localgreenmaterials.org.

Training and Educational Opportunities
Opportunities will continue to be developed and offered that will facilitate an expanded regional knowledge base in sustainable practices and green building practices. Cultivate Green will use its partnerships to reach into the community to impact the entire community. Educational opportunities will be offered to the community as well as the design, building and construction professionals; government agencies, including permitting and inspection personnel; local officials, as well as realtors, mortgage bankers, and the insurance industry professionals.
